ABSTRACT

Objectives Biopolymer polysaccharide, Proteoglycan (PG) is increasing the exposure as Japanese functional ingredient. And it showed that the function for knee pains is effected by the anti- inflammatory action through the mechanism of immune tolerance.
Methods This study evaluated efficacy of dietary supplement contained PG extracted from salmon nasal cartilage on knee uncomfortableness in healthy volunteers for 12 weeks. The test food group ingested PG (900-1400kDa) 5mg/time/day from one hard gelatin capsule contained salmon nasal cartilage extract. This study was used original visual analogue scale (VAS) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as primary evaluation items. This study evaluates the both of subjective assessment and the anti- inflammatory biomarker. The selection of research subjects was thorough so that the subjects don’t include borderline knee pain patients.
Results Our results showed the significant difference in the VAS score percent change: Q1 (Comprehensive evaluation) of PG group compared with placebo group (P=0.049, Student’s t-test) at 4 weeks after the ingestion. And it’s showed the trend of statistical significant in the VAS score change: Q10 and Q11 of PG group compared with placebo group at 4 weeks after the ingestion (Q10 evaluated long-time walking load: P=0.053, Q11 evaluated strong load by straight sitting: P=0.097). These result is shown that this dietary supplement contained PG is effective in Knee Uncomfortableness. In addition, the hs-CRP in PG group showed value decreasing trend identified the decreasing of VAS score: Q1. It’s showed that the efficacy of PG extracted from salmon nasal cartilage is caused by anti- inflammatory action through the mechanism of immune tolerance.
Conclusions This study suggest that daily administration of dietary supplement containing 5mg PG is effective for improving and preventing Knee Uncomfortableness.
